During 1970’s the Training Department of Schieffelin Institute of Health Research and Leprosy Centre, Karigiri was active conducting various short and long term training courses in the specialty of leprosy, which were recognized by the State and Central Governments.   Many Medical and non-medical personnel from India and abroad have undergone these training courses and these courses were internationally recognized ones.

After the integration of leprosy services into the general health services, our institution has extended its services in general health care, mainly for the benefit of the people living around Karigiri Hospital. The institution has also started other Diploma training programs which are affiliated to the Christian Medical Association of India and the Rehabilitation Council of India.

Need for higher allied health course training:

The professional contribution of those who pass out with Diploma qualification is significant in health sector and this level of professional training needs to be continued.   Other private sector hospitals and Government institutions however prefer courses that are recognized by a University preferably at a degree level.

Hence there is a need to train health professionals at a higher level for carrying out higher level of professional activities. To take up supervisory and leadership roles, we need to prepare quality health professionals needed for the nation.

Keeping in mind the demands and changing scenario in health field, a College was established (College of Health Sciences – COHS) as an integral part of Training Department to conduct Degree courses in Allied Health Sciences.

Courses Recognized by The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai:

The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai has granted affiliation to SIHR & LC, Karigiri to conduct the following seven degree courses from the year 2011 and the number of seats allotted is given against each course:

  1.           B.Sc. Optometry                                                  …      5 seats

  3.           B.Sc. Medical Record Science                             …      5 seats

  4.           B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology               …       10 seats

  7.           B.Sc. Medical Sociology                                      …       15 seats

     Selection Process:

    The process of selection is purely on merit basis.  Qualified candidates should undertake a common entrance examination.  And those who have cleared the entrance examination should attend a personal interview.   Selection will be finalized based on the performance of the students.


  • Fully furnished Class rooms, Auditorium, Seminar rooms, with audiovisual Aids, LCD, OHPs etc.

  • Fully equipped Library with adequate number of books for the use of students.

  • Computer lab with internet facilities

  • Basic Sciences Laboratory with necessary equipments for practical purposes

  • Prosthetics and Orthotics Workshop with adequate equipments for teaching the production of Prostheses and Orthotics

  • Rubber Mill for the production of Micro Cellular Rubber and Ortho shoe section to produce protective shoes / sandals

  • Medical Record Department with a wealth of patients’ records

  • Fixed X-Ray unit, C-Arm, Mobile X-ray unit, Ultra Sound Scan

  • OPD facilities with an average attendance of 500 patients per day

  • Adequate transport for the College’s use.


  • Trained and committed teachers with ample experience, who inspire discipline during the college hours and instill values in the trainees.

  • Staff to provide adequate feedback and support to weak students.

  • Counsellors available for extending necessary counselling to needy students.

    Features of B.Sc. Allied Health Science Courses:

  • Intensive theory classes are taught by using latest learning methods and audio visuals

  • The practical skills to be acquired are taught both as demonstration and hands on experience.

  • The courses have a college level status and the students will have to be treated as college students with all college level expectations.

  • Assessment is continuous and intensive with the University requiring internal assessment marks for final results.

    Future Direction

    Future plan is to impart Continuing Medical Education Programme through Distance Education.  Necessary ground work has been initiated in this direction.
