PROFILE

The Karigiri School of Nursing (KSON) is an integral part of the Schieffelin Institute of Health-Research and Leprosy Centre, (SIH-R & LC) Karigiri. 

This Institution has been in existence since1955 and has provided excellent care for persons affected by leprosy since then.  It commenced as a Leprosy Research establishment and from its inception has been recognized by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Government of India and World Health Organization, as a leader in the management and care of persons affected by leprosy.  It diversified its activity since about 10 years back and is now a not-for-profit hospital, offering quality care in the areas of General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ortho, Paediatrics, ENT Surgery, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Community Health, Dental, Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology.  It has a well-equipped Laboratory undertaking most common investigations and some sophisticated tests.  It has X-ray and Ultra-sound facilities.   A Prosthetics and Orthotics division provides customized special aids for persons with anaesthetic extremities, including Diabetes and Leprosy.  A state-of-the-art Rubber Mill manufactures special grade Micro-Cellular Rubber for use in these specialized foot-wear requirements.

This Institution is located in 250 acres of land with extensive greenery, fresh air and wide-open spaces.  Its training facilities include various Diploma courses recognized by the Christian Medical Association of India, Government of India and degree courses by the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University. The Karigiri School of nursing was started in 2001. It continues to provide an excellent education to the students of General Nursing and Midwifery since 2001, when it was started.

COMMUNITY (URBAN / RURAL – PROFILE) 

                     Our Community Health Nursing Department covers a population of 14,500 both in the rural area and in the urban area.

The students activities are as follows:-

¨Identify the common beliefs, customs, taboos, their attitudes and practices, regarding health and sanitation and  interpret the findings. 

¨Plan and perform home visits for clients such as antenatals, postnatals, newborn & infants, preschoolers, morbidities and patients with minor ailments. 

¨ Learn about the available facilities in the urban & rural areas.

¨Carryout relevant nursing activities / procedures during their home visits

¨ Perform research project based on identified needs.

DIPLOMA IN GENERAL NURSING AND MIDWIFERY

ADMISSION:

In 2001 the School of nursing was started with G.N.M. course.  Every year we select 20 candidates to the G.N.M. (General Nursing and Midwifery) course after a rigorous entrance and practical examination followed by an interview and physical check up in order to select the suitable candidates.

DURATION:3 ½ years.

ELIGIBILITY
¨Minimum and Maximum age of admission will be 17 years to 22 years and relaxable circumstances up to 35  years.

¨Only Female unmarried candidates are eligible to apply.

¨Should have passed +2 or equivalent examination with aggregate of 40% marks. (according to INC norm)

¨Admission of students once in a year

¨Receipt of applications by April  

¨Conduct of Entrance Examination by May at Karigiri, Vellore district. This is based on the + 2 syllabus of Tamil Nadu with Science subjects and also includes tests on English, General Knowledge and General Ability.

 STUDENTS DEVELOPMENT

Students are provided with various opportunities to exhibit their talents and abilities. They are able to develop their skills and leadership qualities through the faculty guidance. They are nurtured spiritually, academically and professionally. Deserving students are provided with scholarships.

The student development programmes are usually coordinated with the Student Nurses Association activities. As part of Student Nurses Association, we conduct programmes related to socio cultural, sports and educational activities. Students participate in various competitions held within the institution as well as with other institutions.

RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

Students are nurtured spiritually through our religious activity committee. Their lives are enriched by the daily devotions and by participating in retreats conducted. They are also encouraged to participate in various religious competitions. 

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT

Our teaching faculty is committed to train and guide the students with Christian compassion and values. Teaching staff update themselves with current trends in nursing education by regular continuing education and staff development programmes. They also participate in various regional and national conferences and workshops.

LAMP LIGHTING CEREMONY

Every year we organize a Lamp Lighting ceremony for the freshers to consecrate and commit themselves to the profession they are called for. Last year 20 students dedicated themselves to the profession by taking the Florence Nightingale pledge. 

PLACEMENTS

After completion of the GNM course, our graduates are placed in well renowned tertiary care institutions in India and abroad. Our graduates have gained a good reputation from the institutions they are employed in and brought credit to their Alma Matter. They are in real demand in all these institutions because of their standard nursing practices and inculcated values
